FAQs - Dermaplaning

  • Dermaplaning is a highly effective method for exfoliating the skin, serving as an excellent alternative to techniques like microdermabrasion. This physical exfoliation method employs a sterile surgical blade, angled precisely and gently glided across the surface of the skin. It effectively removes vellus hair, often referred to as peach fuzz, along with dead skin cells, minimizing trauma to the skin.

  • This technique allows for exfoliation even on the most sensitive skin types with minimal redness and no downtime. After a dermaplaning session, your skin can better absorb skincare products, leading to a noticeably softer, smoother texture and a radiant glow. Additionally, it can help diminish fine lines, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation.

The removal of vellus hair does not lead to it growing back thicker or darker. This is because peach fuzz consistently returns to its original state, regardless of the removal method. While dermaplaning resembles shaving, it combines hair removal with exfoliation of dead skin. Unlike standard razors, surgical blades leave hair with a finer edge, while only hormonal hair may grow back differently.

  • The tools used in professional settings are sterile, surgical-grade blades that are significantly sharper than those available for home use. This allows estheticians to effectively remove more dead skin and hair. I am trained and certified to use these specialized blades, whereas at-home tools do not compare to a professional-grade 10 blade.

  • For optimal results, it is advisable to undergo dermaplaning every 4-6 weeks, ideally once vellus hair starts to grow back. Vellus hair is the fine hair our bodies naturally produce to maintain warmth and will always regrow uniformly, regardless of the removal technique.

  • Absolutely! Applying makeup post-dermaplaning is not only possible but also advantageous, as it allows for smoother application and better blending. With uneven skin, foundations and highlighters may struggle to adhere properly, often resting on dead skin cells and scars. Dermaplaning can enhance the clarity of your skin, reducing oil buildup, especially in the first week or two following treatment. After dermaplaning, you’ll have a flawless canvas for your makeup, free from impurities.
